You Want Hope...I'll Give You Hope

As the New Orleans Pelicans get ready to play the Portland Trail Blazers tonight, I know it's hard to find much encouraging about the team's 8-19 start. I'm not here to tell you the Pels are playing great basketball, but I will say that there are still many reasons you shouldn't give up on the season just yet. For the light at the end of the tunnel, please check out the video....however, if they lose tonight, I'm erasing this story from your memory.

Bad Body Language

It's the elephant in the room that no one wants to talk about. But the time has come...it must be said. Anthony Davis has checked out. As much as I love the young superstar's potential, his body language this season has been terrible. I know Davis is only 22 years old & has been the face of the Pelicans franchise since he was a teenager. But for the first time in his young career, Davis looks disengaged & it appears the constant losing has taken its toll. Here's the rest of the story...

Where's the Effort?

Real talk people. Have you ever been in such a dire situation with a child, a friend or possibly even a significant other, when it was time for the "sit-down conversation?" You know the one. When their behavior had become so concerning, they needed to have "the talk"? Well, that's exactly where I am with this New Orleans Pelicans team...Mr. Half Glass Full is now near empty. This video comes with a warning....it ain't pleasant & it ain't pretty, but it's the HARD CORE TRUTH. Enjoy!

After starting the NBA season with a 6-18 record & only one road win in a baker's dozen of attempts, not much was expected from the New Orleans Pelicans as they tipped off against the Utah Jazz tonight in Salt Lake City. And for 3 quarters, the script was familiar....the Pelicans played well early, stayed competitive for most of the game, and then their opponent started to pull away late in the 3rd quarter. MSU Men's Basketball Falls At FSU

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – A fast start was not enough for the Mississippi State men’s basketball team Wednesday night against Florida State. The Bulldogs fell behind in the late stages of the first half and could not overcome a strong second-half performance by the Seminoles, falling 90-66 at the Tucker Center. (Article Source: MSU Athletics Media Relations)

AFTERMATH: APP STATE vs. TEXAS

It was gritty more than pretty, but for 30 minutes of game time Appalachian State had played Texas to a draw on the Longhorns’ floor. As has happened in other games this young season the Mountaineers didn’t finish off with the win. It hasn’t been the same symptom in each of those losses but the result has been identical. App put forth winning effort, but the execution didn’t follow.

Time to Tinker?

It's no secret that the Pelicans have been exploring trade options, especially now that NBA teams are allowed to deal players that signed free agent contracts before September 16th. We've been hearing a lot about how the Pels need to get an active up & down small forward in the mix...and Phoenix' Markieff Morris would fit in beautifully. But today, some rumors are running rampantly how about a perennial All-Star center who might be available for relatively cheap.

Pelicans-Jazz Pregame Breakdown

What are the New Orleans Pelicans trying to be this season? The high octane free-flowing offensive team that new head coach Alvin Gentry brought over from his stint with the Golden State Warriors? After several games, it's obvious the Pels don't have the right pieces for that offense. But after a week of watching them attempt to slam the ball into Anthony Davis in predictable, half-court sets, I'm not sure that will work either. Tonight, they need to find a happy medium vs the Utah Jazz.

One Step Forward, Two Steps Back

One step forward and then two, three, four & sometimes even five steps back. It's been the prominent theme for the disappointing New Orleans Pelicans, who are almost two months into this once-promising season. Here's a peek into some of the reasons why....

Does AD Have Buyer's Remorse?

Anthony Davis surprised many "NBA Insiders" this summer when he signed a mega extension to his Pelicans rookie contract for a whopping $29 million a year. It wasn't surprising that he actually re-signed with the team, it was more the fact that Davis agreed to the deal literally one minute after the free agency period began on July 1st, showing the rest of the league that he meant business. But after the Pels lethargic start, one has to wonder if the superstar big man might have buyer's remorse.

NBA's Most Consistently Inconsistent

The New Orleans Pelicans are at a serious early season crossroads. They've only won 5 games in 21 tries this year, but the Pels have proven they can compete, and win, against some of the NBA's elite. In fact, the teams the Pelicans have beaten own a combined 54-32 record, including the always powerful Spurs & Lebron-led Cavs. And that's exactly what makes their current 5-16 record so maddening. It's happened, the Pels have become the league's most consistently inconsistent team....

Something Special

Despite the slow start of the 2015-16 season, the New Orleans Pelicans have played pretty good basketball against some of their toughest opponents. And that was certainly evident when Lebron James & the Cleveland Cavaliers came to town Friday night. And after the horrific luck that's hovered over this Pelican franchise, many weren't sure if they'd ever see that again...

AFTERMATH: MERCER vs. APP STATE

Appalachian State did everything they needed to do to earn a win against a good Mercer team on Friday – except finish. It’s a tough lesson to learn but one that may actually benefit the Mountaineers down the road. App State is also a good team with lots of future upside, but not so good or developed that anything can be taken for granted. This one hurt, but App has to move on.

Holding Down the Fort

A week ago today, the New Orleans Pelicans looked like a team completely without direction heading nowhere in particular, and heading their fast. After all, the Pels had lost 10 of their first eleven games of the season, and were facing the prospects of playing the San Antonio Spurs, the most consistently powerful team of the past two decades. Well, after an impressive 3-game win streak, another win on the road against a beaten down Clippers team doesn't seem so far-fetched...

Alabama Basketball Upsets Wichita St, 64-60

ORLANDO, Fla. – The Alabama men’s basketball team upset No. 20 Wichita State, 64-60, on Friday in the second round of the 2015 AdvoCare Invitational. It was the first win for the Crimson Tide over a ranked opponent since Jan. 18, 2011, when Alabama downed then-No. 12 Kentucky at home (68-66).

A Noah Trade To Mavs? The Dallas Thinking

It's a 'speculative rumor,' you might say, and it connects Bulls center Joakim Noah to the Mavs in trade. What would the thinking on Dallas' part be here?

AFTERMATH: APP STATE vs. LIBERTY

In the moment that could’ve spelled defeat for Appalachian State, the Mountaineers suddenly found themselves – or found their offense – and turned it into a going-away victory over Liberty. Now that App State rediscovered that extra gear will they continue to use it? The answer is only hours away, as Appalachian returns to the court on Friday to face a more challenging opponent.

CHALLENGE IN MUSIC CITY PREVIEW

While most of us will spend Thanksgiving weekend pushing back from the table Appalachian State Basketball will spend their holiday in a dry run for the postseason, playing three games in four days. For those postseason expectations to materialize the Mountaineers will need to start finishing what they start, especially offensively where good shots aren’t resulting in points often enough.

Big Breakthrough!

The injury-plagued New Orleans Pelicans started the much anticipated season on a 6-game losing streak. And after getting their first win two weeks ago, the Pels followed that up with another 5 losses in a row. The situation had gotten so ridiculous, the team was forced to use 12 different starting lineups in their first 12 games. So much for the 'continuity' the Pelicans thought they had coming into the season. Instead of giving up, they buckled down & put themselves back in playoff contention.

APP STATE vs. TULANE GAME PREVIEW

Appalachian State is only three games into the new season, but there’s some early anxiety developing around the team’s offensive inconsistency. Since a season-opening win the Mountaineers have seemingly regressed with their shooting and scoring in each subsequent loss. The Mountaineer newcomers have to start adding some scoring punch, and soon.

Eagles win thriller over Penguins

That was fun...

AFTERMATH: APP STATE vs. HAMPTON

Appalachian State Coach Jim Fox used the word “exposed” following the loss to Furman, in describing the Mountaineers’ current struggles. Hampton turned exposed into exploited in running App State off the floor in the second half of an 82-61 blowout. Putting the ball in the basket, or more to the point not, is dooming Appalachian. With four games in the next week the solution need to be imminent.

BTTV: Cuonzo Martin Talks ECU Squeaker

BERKELEY -- What did Cal head coach Cuonzo Martin think of the Bears' squeaker over zoning East Carolina?

PELS WIN...PELS WIN...Part Deux

Although the start of the New Orleans Pelicans season has been a nightmare having lost 11 of their first 12 games, they have had recent success against the powerful San Antonio Spurs. After all, the last time the Spurs came to town, the Pels got a dramatic victory to make the NBA playoffs. Tonight, those same Spurs arrived with a 6-game win streak, while the Pels had dropped five in a row. A recipe for another easy Spurs win, right? Not so fast my friend...THE REST OF THE STORY!

Crimson Tide Defeats Ragin' Cajuns, 105-93

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - Shawn Long posted a double-double with 25 points and 14 rebounds to become the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns all-time leading rebounder, but Alabama sizzled from long range and held off a late rally for a 105-93 victory in a non-conference game on Friday at Coleman Coliseum.

Monster Night for AD

It's been no secret that Anthony Davis has appeared lost at times this season trying to grasp new head coach Alvin Gentry's up-tempo, long-range shooting style of offense. It's also no secret that Davis has been injury prone & misses games, to the tune of 16 per year since he came to the NBA. And before tonight, he had already sat out 4 1/2 of the Pels first 12 contests with hip & shoulder injuries. But when AD is healthy & ready to play, great things usually happen....

The Flamethrower Strikes Again

The Pelicans finally got their 2nd win of the season tonight vs the always powerful San Antonio Spurs. With Anthony Davis, Tim Duncan, LaMarcus Aldridge & Kawhi Leonard all playing, who would have thought the best forward on the Smoothie King Center floor would be the Pels Ryan Anderson? But after 30 points and six 3-pointers, the sharp shooting Anderson left no doubt to who was the MVP tonight. Here's the REST OF THE STORY....

Alabama Uses Treys For 105-93 Win

Coming off a 32-point road loss at Dayton, Avery Johnson and his Alabama basketball team were looking for positives against the Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns Friday night. After a 105-93 Bama victory, Johnson found a few things to smile about. At least three, as in 3-pointers, as his team made 15-of-25 behind the arc, a blistering 60 per cent.

Hip Check!

During the jubilation of the Pelicans first victory of the season last night, there was also some trepidation in the locker room because superstar power forward Anthony Davis was injured late in the 2nd quarter. After hitting the floor hard with 3 seconds left in the half, Coach Alvin Gentry took Davis out of the game. And while most thought the move was precautionary, but AD never returned to the court. His injury, diagnosed as a hip contusion, kept him out of tonight's Hawks game as well.

After starting the year with 6 straight less-than-impressive losses, fans were becoming desperate for that elusive first win. DESPERATION TIME

Professional sports fans are a fickle bunch. When things start to go south for the 'home team', many of us feel the sky is falling and the world will certainly end tomorrow. Game Two was even worse...Blazers guard CJ McCollum went from rotation player to an All-Star candidate with his 37-point performance.
